Stephen King, Vandal

August 16, 2007
I love this little story, from Shelf Awareness:

Horrors! Traveling unannounced in Alice Springs, Australia, Stephen King quietly signed six copies of his books in a Dymocks store on Tuesday and was reported to the staff by a customer for "defacing" books, the AAP (via the Age) reported. Bookstore manager Bev Ellis speculated that the culprit might be King, but he had already left the building. She caught up with him in the fruits and vegetable section of Woolworths. She said that King was "polite and well spoken," adding, "He introduced me to his friends and we had a talk and then I said 'Well I'll leave you to the tomatoes.' "

Cheers,
Mark Terry

LOL! What a story!

Do you have any book signing stories?

I think anybody who does signings ends up with some stories.

I have the one where I was promoting CATFISH GURU, which features a forensic toxicologist, and a little old lady regaled me with stories about how her husband got cancer from working with asbestos installing brake linings for Fords and I said, "So how's he doing?"

"He's dead!"

I have the story about going down to a book signing at the Wayne State University bookstore on a Friday afternoon in July with another author and neither one of us sold a single copy.

And there's the one where I was introduced to Loren Estleman who jumped down my throat about something I had posted on DorothyL promoting the event (it was a misunderstanding and we parted amicably, but sheesh).

Yeah, I think every book signing ends up with some sort of story.
