Some men...

September 21, 2007
I just watched, er, listened, to a trailer for the next Batman movie: The Dark Knight.

There doesn't actually seem to be any footage here, but there's a wonderful monologue by Alfred, played by Michael Caine, where he says: "Some men just want to watch the world burn."

Damn, that's a great line. And such a key to my own novels. Motives? Don't need no stinkin' motives. Some men just want to watch the world burn.

And don't they? Really?

Yep. There's a school of thought that villains all have to be complex, maybe even sympathetic in some way, but I think there are people who are just *bad*. Not interesting, or puzzling...just rotten for no particular reason.

I've done a number of panels over the years where mystery authors have said they think serial killers are boring because, essentially, they're damaged individuals with very similar pathologies and they're boring to write about.

I understand where they're coming from. I do find it interest... what makes a seemingly normal person commit a murder?

At the same time, more in tune with my books at the moment, is, what kind of person becomes a mass murderer, who thinks it's okay to kill any number of innocent people in order to make a political/religious/personal statement.

Then again: some men just want to watch the world burn.
