The Best Writing Advice EVER!!!

September 5, 2008

"If I had to give young writers advice, I would say don't listen to writers talking about writing or themselves."
--Lillian Hellman

God knows what she'd think of blogs.

Happy Friday!

Honestly, I am so glad I only knew one other writer personally during my first five or so years writing.

For me, at least, there's something to be said for writing in one's own cave. I wouldn't trade those years for anything, and I can't really say I've become a better writer by socializing and blogging amongst other writers.

I do enjoy talking with other writers, though, simply on a social level. I don't have a whole lot in common with the 9-5 crowd.

Ain't that the truth...

Great quote, thanks for posting. And I know a few older writers (he said, pretending not to look in the mirror) who might want to consider the advice, too!

hahahaha this is so true. I think most writers forget to add the disclaimer of how individual everyone's experiences are, and how there is no one fool proof plan for life or writing.

Listening to what other writers say all the time, almost guarantees that you will short circuit your own intuition on the subject.
