Unfortunately, that's what my desk usually looks like, even when I'm not mid-project. :)
I don't think this is all that bad. Clearly, you're getting your groove on!

It's more a problem of depth. The pile is about 4 inches high and growing. It's shifting vertically at the same time it's shifting horizontally.
All I can say is that your midden looks neater than mine.
